As the daughter of an artist, and the eldest child in a large family, Laura Willett feels that she was destined to be both an artist and a teacher. Making art has been her purpose and passion as long as she can remember.
Willett found the first iterations of her voice as an artist in the AP art studio program at Baylor. She continued her education at Birmingham Southern University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Since then, her craft as a painter has benefitted greatly by studying at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, the Fine Arts Atelier in Atlanta and the Townsend Atelier in Chattanooga.
Willett believes that through intention, hard work, and determination, every painting that she creates is a wish or a prayer to something higher than our selves. She has focused primarily on religious or spiritual themes as she explores the role of women in contemporary society.
Cannonized contemporary artist, current N.Y.C. gallerist, and nationally published art critic Michael David says of Willett’s work:
“In the hands of a less skilled painter, these paintings would seem merely academic. Willet’s core belief and courage translate into a remarkable handling and nuanced approach to the practice of painting. Her devotion to her craft and her ‘transformation’ by the practice of painting, her love of subject matter create a state and a record that is spiritual in it’s devotion and passion. While the conceptual underpinning and meaning of her work cannot and should not be ignored, the paintings stand on their own as works of art, powerful and resolute.”
Willett now lives in Chattanoooga, TN. She is married to painter and art teacher Eric Keller with whom she shares a studio space, and just taught her 20th year as an art teacher at Baylor School. There, she enthusiastically shared her love of the creative process and passion for art with burgeoning young artists every day.
